Challenge 4 – Brouye Magazine Cover

Challenge 3 is over and even thought a lot less people voted this time, it looks like Jeff eeked out another win!

This week…err, last few days… our new challenge will be to design a magazine cover! And what better name to call the magazine than Brouye!

Magazines have always had a special place in my heart because of their ability to combine wicked creativity with a strict, structured text aspect. My childhood was lined with various magazine subscriptions like Wizard, Highlights, ESPN, SLAM, GQ, Men’s Health. As the years progressed, the magazine creativity kept upping the ante! Article titles were done by respected artists and covers were filled with beautiful typography that could easily double as a wall poster. Even the advent of infographics and hand drawn guides make everything look a little more appealing.

Until recently, I had no idea how a magazine was made. I mean, I had a general idea that you have main stories and then fill out the content around them but that’s about all I could determine. Last week, I saw this awesome video that really gave me a quick summary/look at how a whole monthly magazine issue is created.

Its so awesome to see how they map the entire layout on indesign and kind of assign pages to each writer and artist.

For our challenge, we are definitely NOT doing an entire magazine (although, maybe one day.. and digital, not printed) but rather just a kick-ass magazine cover! I think we discussed that the main front image didn’t have to be anything in particular but both agreed that when it comes to magazine covers, sex sells.

So lets get to it! Vote on the winner next Monday morning.

Challenge 3 – Casey

Ok, let me preface this by saying that I didn’t watch a SINGLE minute of Shark Week this year…. sadly, I kinda had no time and was working on some other things. However, that did not diminish my love for badass sharks and wine!

I’ve done a few wine label designs in the past and have always tried to do some design that you don’t see out there these days. Lately, I’ve been seeing a ton of beer bottle designs that are super unique and look almost hand drawn (like Jeff’s design actually) but haven’t seen anything updated for a wine bottle. Jenna and I drink our fair share of wine …so we’ve done the research haha.

Check it:

What do ya’ll think?

It’s not exactly as I imagined it and I would have like to add more highlights…but it’s still pretty cool!

Challenge 3 Shark Week Wine – Jeff

Shark week might be over on Discovery 😦 but somehow through the tears of sadness I was able to get a wine label designed for you guys! Just to recap this week’s challenge was a Shark Week inspired label for a wine.

I wanted total creative freedom with this piece so I made up a winery (Pacific Shores) and wine name (Great Red) that both tied in to sharks! I also chose a Red wine which of course reminds us of bloooood in the water.

Now to get to the design! This one was a pure labor of love. I’m sure I could have done it a better way, but I hand drew (on a wacom tablet) each and every single line of the illustration…yep…including the text! I was going for a sort of woodcut feel because there is just so much gouging, slicing, and severing during shark week.

Without further delay…SHABAM

Challenge 3! Shark Week Wine Label

Who won last weeks design challenge? Vote now!

“Live every week like it’s Shark Week!”

Wise words for anyone, anywhere. I mean…who doesn’t love this week-long event on Discovery Channel that features 20 foot Great Whites breaching the water in super-slow motion?? Obviously a rhetorical question, because EVERYONE loves SHARK WEEK!

Let us begin the Shark Week design challenge! Casey and I will be using sharks as our theme for the next design, of course working while we tune in to “Sharkzilla” and “How Jaws Changed the World”. One more thing to note is that we will be designing wine labels. Total creative freedom is allowed, including winery name, which can be made-up or existing.

One week, let’s do this. I’m going to go chum the creative waters.

Challenge 2 – Casey

When you think of Usain Bolt, you think electric, powerful and exciting. I want to evoke all those emotions and more in this weeks design.

Usain Bolt is a freaking physical specimen! 6’5″ with a wingspan of a falcon and long long legs that travel faster than anyone else in the entire world. He has the body of a superhero. That’s where I went with this design…I wanted to take the idea of the Flash and incorporate that energy and speed into my design!

Check it: He is …. The Lightning Bolt!

For this project, I chose to only use the pictures that I found online combined with Photoshop.

Be sure to check out Jeff’s and vote on who’s is the best!

Challenge 2 – Jeff

Here is my Usain Bolt submission! I was inspired by the self-proclaimed “legend” after he dominated the Men’s sprints yet again at the olympic games.

This piece is vector mixed with photoshop work and features the sprint king outrunning bullets! Get it?? Faster than a speeding…you get it.

Take some time to really appreciate the attention to detail, all the blocks of color were outlined individually and the bullets are so much more detailed when you take a closer look 🙂

Pick me pick me!

Bye bye London

The 2012 Olympic games came to a conclusion last night and it was sad to say goodbye to some great entertainment. There’s nothing like watching the best athletes from your country duke it out with the top athletes from other countries. It evokes pride and happiness and overall patriotic feelings that can make you feel good about yourself again. I’m sad to see them go but am happy to have created an awesome Usain Bolt tribute piece to remember these games with.

Unfortunately, you’re going to have to wait until tonight for us to unveil our designs because Jeff won’t be able to get to a computer until then.

Meanwhile… enjoy some nice images of the Spice Girls from last night…. I felt like we were back in middle school… haha
